This race is a Bay Area classic! No other local race comes close to it for scenery, variety of water conditions, tradition, and occasional mayhem in the mud flats!!

The race begins and ends at the Estero Americano, a tidal estuary that runs from the burg of Valley Ford down, some six miles, to the Pacific Ocean. Along the way the narrow and winding slough becomes wider and more picturesque, passing grazing cattle, the occasional river otter, and if we're lucky, golden eagles. Over the years, some of the world's greatest racing paddlers have participated; and as always, confirmed social paddlers enjoy the Pageant at their own pace.

This is a twelve mile flat water race, which is open to all paddle craft: traditional canoes, racing kayaks, one and two-person outrigger canoes, surfskis, sea kayaks, and so on. The race will divide into three groups, each separated by 20 minute intervals: recreational paddlers start first, followed by half-fast racers; the elite racers bring up the rear. The staggered start keeps all levels of paddlers generally together, adding to the Cow Patty spirit.

The race will be followed by an awards ceremony, raffle prize drawing, and no-host spaghetti feed at Dinucci's Restaurant in Valley Ford, a Sonoma County institution. Local wine will flow like water, and the full bar will cater to weary paddlers.

THE DETAILS
· Saturday, February 2, 2008
· Estero Americano put-in -- corner of Marsh and Estero Roads, just SW of Valley Ford
· "Cowstumes" encouraged (cow hats, shirts, paraphernalia.....)
· $20 registration fee pays for insurance and expenses -- all proceeds will be donated to the Sonoma Land Trust (which ensures the integrity of the Estero)
· Registration begins at 8:45 (more info to follow)
· Paddlers meeting at 9:30
· First heat begins at 10:00
· Everyone Off-the-water no later than 1:00 pm – lunch begins at 1:30

I have been watching craigslist in Seattle off & on for a while now looking for a buy on a used kayak. I will be down there in a couple weeks and was hoping to add a boat to my adventure arsenal there. Because I only have room for one I am looking for a good ‘all around’ boat, something in the 13 to 16 ft range I think, one that will haul myself and about 100 lbs of gear if I wanted to, so a capacity of roughly 300 lbs.
I do run across a few on there but they seem to be pretty high priced, I mean for a couple hundred more bucks I could buy a new one with a warranty. Does this seem odd? or is there somewhere else I could be looking?
I don’t have a problem buying a new one, just thought for my first boat I would try to get a used (cheaper) one until I had a bit more experience and knew what I wanted.
Any tips?

So, I went Kayaking this passed Saturday out on lake Amistad. It was a bit windy, but my friend and I figured it wouldn't get any worse. Were we ever wrong! I'm from the bay area so I had no clue what the weather was like on this lake. For about two hours straight my friend and I fought the wind that picked up to around 15-20 mph! After an hour and a half he had to tie my kayak to his just to get me in. It was crazy!!!

Tell me about your crazy kayaking stories!

P.S. anyone have any tips for kayaking in Monterey Bay?
happy paddling!

PacifiCorp Energy eases to closure of Klamath dams
8/3/2006

While admitting that “many complex social, political and economic issues” still need to be addressed, the president of one of the nation’s leading power supply companies says he is optimistic about the future of Native American interests in the Klamath River Basin area.

Bill Fehrman, president of PacifiCorp Energy, said his company was not opposed to dam removal or other settlement opportunities “as long as our customers are not harmed and our property rights are respected.”

For the past several years, Klamath Basin Tribes have appealed to PacifiCorp to remove their Klamath River dams. The tribes and other groups argue that the dams deny salmon access to more than 350 miles of historic spawning habitat, heat the river to temperatures lethal to salmon and provide habitat for massive blooms of toxic blue algae.

“These negative impacts of these dams clearly justify their removal,” said Howard McConnell, chairperson of the Yurok Tribe.
Fehrman’s announcement coincided with a Wednesday rally in Portland, where international hydropower corporations are holding a major conference. Portland also is the home of PacifiCorp Energy and Pacific Power.

In a media release, the Klamath Tribes of Oregon, the Karuk Tribe and the Yurok Tribe noted that “the Klamath River has been the poster child for ecological collapse since the new infamous fish kill of 2002 left 68,000 adult salmon dead. Since then, the tribes, conservation groups, fishermen, farmers and now PacifiCorp have been working on solutions to what has metastasized into a major problem for the entire West Coast.”

Scott Boley, a fisherman and member of the Oregon Salmon Council, said, “This year’s West Coast fisheries closures were mandated to protect struggling Klamath River salmon runs. It is costing the states of Oregon and California millions in lost revenues and many fishermen are losing their jobs.”

“We consider salmon to be our relations,” said Leaf Hillman, vice chair of the Yurok Tribe. “They are part of our cultural identity. What’s more, many of my people still fish to feed themselves and their families.”

Allen Foreman, chairperson of the Klamath Tribes, said, “We have not fished for salmon for more than 88 years when the first ladderless dam was built. Now, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to remove these dams and bring our salmon home.”

McConnell said the Yurok “are seeing positive momentum on the issue of dam removal” and that Fehrman’s comments are “very encouraging.”

“The next step,” McConnell said, “is pairing action with words. The Yurok Tribe will work closely with all parties in the basin to achieve our long-term goal of a free-flowing river and a restored fishery.”

So I'm now in the market for a kayak. I'm tall - 6' 3" - and heavy - 250 lbs. I'm going to be looking for a touring kayak to used mainly on rivers and estuaries at the Oregon coast.

Can someone give me any tips on what to look out for? Brands? Lenght of kayak? Are rudders a good idea? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

He was only about 3 feet long, hiding in the shade of a bush. The best part was, when I was swimming with one of them, he actually turned around and swam back up to me :) they usually just kind of float away when they are done getting petted. It was beautiful. And my little sister came down from Orlando to go with us. We played on a rope swing. Oh what a great day.

Is there a name for this type of boat? I'd like something sturdy as far as tippiness goes because I'd like to take it to the bay and play for hours at a time. Is that a completely different kind of boat than the first one I described?
Any help is very appreciated.

My sit-on-top and recreational models are fine for class I-II but after that you need a WW kayak or an inflatable. It was GREAT, I haven't had that much fun in ages. Great being out on such a gorgeous day, seeing all the other people out on the water, not envying the poor folks stuck in car traffic.

The one down side to this acquisition of a new hobby is that about a half hour out, my right leg started falling asleep. The NWOC catalog lists various seat cushions, as well as a cushion for under the thighs to keep nerves and blood vessels from getting scrunched. I also have this happen when I work out on the rowing machine at the Y, so I wonder if a solution on one side (kayak or rowing machine) will help elsewhere...

It was SO awesome being out there, I can't wait to get out again!

I don't understand this no-seeum stuff for the northwest here as it seems that it would just drip in the moist evening and mornings...

I dunno. Share you oar-dudes and paddle-bettys I wanna hear from ye.

It all started about 4 years ago when I went kayaking for the first time as an adult. Even though I paddled on just flat water that first time I was addicted! Soon I found myself building my first kayak and working a part time second job at a kayak store.

It went on from there to setting up and leading trips out to the local Islands. Playing tag with freighters on long open crossings, frolicking with wildlife and exploring many sea caves. Then my friends I got a dependable roll. This opened new worlds to me bringing me to wiled frothing rock choked rivers and the ever-changing surf zone.

Now I spend time every weekend on the water, compete in every surf competition and plan to surf in other countries next year. I have introduced people to this addiction and have even influenced people to build their own kayaks!

I am sorry to say that it is hard to park in my one car garage (I live in a apartment) due to the size of the fleet of boats.
I have;

I still feel that I need a creak boat and another HP surf kayak.
As you see I am truly addicted to kayaking!

I am waiting for the tide to drop today before I take the Marauder out for the first time. It looks like 2-3 foot swells today building to 7-9 tomorrow. I am dreaming of the possible 18+ surf at Jalama the first week of December (the expression session of the year).

Well I can stand it no longer! I am off to surf!
I'm fairly new to kayaking -- only been on two trips but loved both of them. One was the Cahaba River in Alabama. The water level was low at the time but that was fine by me as a newbie. Then I went on a sea kayak trip from the Orcas Islands last month. Too strong winds and waves kept the group from making good time (we were all pretty new to kayaking) so we went to more protected areas. No whales because of that but we did see some harbor seals and a bald eagle. I have access to (it belongs to a friend) a small sit-on-top kayak so if anyone lives in the MS/AL/TN area, I'd be interested in a trip in mid-October.

For 1500 bucks you make your own boat you get to take home w/you. No skills or experience neccessary. Can you think of a better deal? Affordable kayak, and the skills to build one. One of the students they interviewed was a 70+ widow who had never used a drill in her life - and now she's an avid kayaker!

i used to be a member of BASK, but dropped out because my concerns about the environment were viewed as too "political" for a kayak club by some. not by most, but it was clear that if i spoke my mind it would be "disruptive." so i have been looking for another kayak group that thinks that protecting the ocean environment is not "off-topic" to kayaking.

i have, let's see, 7 kayaks in the garage, with lots of paddles, wet suits, etc. I teach both for CCK and privately, and am constantly hounding my friends to go paddling with me.

I've outgrown the Pungo quickly, and now I'm looking for recommendations on what to do from here.

My paddling interest is primarily flatwater, (birdwatching, etc) but I love to cover distance and I want a sleeker boat to do it in. Additionally, I'd like to be able to do some sea paddling, which I don't think my Pungo is really up to, even with a skirt. Plus I just don't fit in it well, certainly not well enough to roll. I do love the fact that it's tough though. Rocks and shallows don't scare it!

I'm 6'5", 235, so size is a consideration.
I am posting this for a friend of mine. She has a 16 foot "Easy Rider" kayak for sale. It appears to be in really good shape (being a sit on top kayaker myself, and fairly new to the sport it looks like it is in good shape to me). She says it was hardly used, but the aluminium rudder appears to be oxidizing a bit. Nothing that can't be buffed out or cleaned up though. It looks like it is just on the surface. It is red with a white hull, fiberglass, and has one hatch in the stern. She is askin $400.00 or best reasonable offer. It is down in San Diego though (Where I am as well), but if anyone is interested, please send me a message and I will see if I can get some photos of it for you all. Thanks for letting me post....And hello....My name is Loaf...I'm new here
